When receiving advice or support from someone dealing with mental health issues, listen with an open mind, stay calm, and avoid judgment. Recognize that mental health struggles affect how a person thinks or feels, so practice patience, validate their emotions without trying to "fix" everything, and encourage professional care when needed.

Listen actively: Let them speak without interrupting or jumping to conclusions.

Avoid dismissive phrases: Do not say things like "just snap out of it" or "everyone feels that way".

Validate their feelings: Use supportive statements like "that sounds really hard" or "I am here for you".

Stay calm: Keep your voice steady and avoid arguments, even if their perspective seems distorted by their illness.

Ask how to help: Let them guide you on whether they need practical tasks done or just someone to sit with them.
