World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD) aims to highlight the importance of addressing suicide as a significant public health issue. With more than 700,000 suicides yearly, the focus is on encouraging open conversations, reducing stigma, and advocating for better mental health policies to promote awareness and help-seeking behaviour.

The major theme of WSPD for 2024-2026 is “Changing the Narratives on Suicide” with a focus on “Telling our Stories”. This theme’s perspective encourages people, societies, companies, and authorities to discuss suicide and suicidal behaviour in its simplest terms.

Some examples of how to change the narrative on suicide include:

  • Addressing the stigma and taboo surrounding suicide
  • Promoting mental health literacy and help-seeking behavior
  • Engaging in conversations to raise awareness and create understanding
  • Advocating for policy change and improved access to mental healthcare
